Communicable Diseases in the North East

Infectious (communicable) diseases is an area of public health which is ignored at one's peril. In recent decades there has been evidence that infectious diseases have been paid less attention that they ought. However, in recent years the havoc that infectious disease can produce has been well demonstrated. We only have to think of HIV infection, BSE and more recently SARS.

The purpose of this report is to bring together information in an easily accessible format on infectious disease in the region. It aims to highlight the issues of importance in this region which are not always the same as in other parts of the country. Most of the data are presented at regional level because of the lack of availability by PCT. None the less we hope this is a useful report.
