Guardian obituary
From Martin Ward Platt, Clinical Director, RMSO
Edmund Hey was an iconic figure to many of us, a father figure to some, and a guru to others. He was a thorn in the flesh of the pompous, the Establishment, and any institution that he considered to be unjustly treating his colleagues. He supported noisily or quietly many doctors whose careers were under threat in civil courts and at the GMC.
The RMSO owes its existence to Ed, who had the vision to start the Perinatal Mortality Survey in the early 1980s. We will all miss terribly the man who knew all the references, who remembered all the physiology, who grasped all the epidemiology, and who was both a profound clinical scientist and a great doctor.
Ed's family has requested that donations to St Oswald's Hospice be made in lieu of flowers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday 24th April 11am at the Parish Church of St George, Jesmond (on Osborne Road, NE2 2TF).
