North of England Collaborative Cerebral Palsy Survey Annual Meeting
Tuesday 9th March 2010
9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: Lancastrian Suite, Gateshead
This conference is designed for parents as well as professionals involved in caring for children and young people with cerebral palsy. This year the theme is cerebral palsy and adolescence – we hope that this will be of wide interest to professionals as well as parents, even those of younger children.
The workshop choices are as follows:
- Leisure activities for young people Karen Parry, Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme Manager & Team
The team from Aiming High for Disabled Children will describe how they’ve consulted with young people and their families about short breaks and how they’ve put what they’ve learned into practice.
- Top tips for effective transition (This workshop is FULL) Dr Naomi Jones & Dr Gill Turner, Northumberland
This workshop will look at definitions and models of transition as well as key factors associated with effective transition. Experience gained from research into transition for young people with complex disabilities in Northumberland will be used to illustrate practical points.
- Helping young people manage their epilepsy Penny Burt, Epilepsy Liaison Nurse & Lisa Jack, Paediatric Nurse Specialist, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Trust
This workshop will address the issues surrounding the treatment of epilepsy in young people and will discuss issues like driving, careers, leisure and living independently with epilepsy. The issues surrounding anti-convulsant treatments will be also discussed. They’ll be time for questions.
- An Introduction to the Employability Project Joe Ayton, Employability Office, The Percy Hedley Foundation
This workshop will provide an introduction to The Employability Project, part of the Percy Hedley Foundation. The aim of the Project is to develop employability opportunities for disabled people and raise awareness of disability in the workplace. The session will look at how the Project works with disabled people and the partnerships it has developed with employers. A short DVD entitled “Employers, Employability and Disability: what’s it all about?” will also be screened. This DVD was produced by the Project and offers views from a group of young people and employers all of whom offer their own perspective on employability and disability.
- Speech therapy research: current studies and future directions Dr Lindsay Pennington, Principal Research Associate, Newcastle University
In the North East of England we have an active programme of research into the communication development of children with CP. In the workshop we will describe the work we have done so far. We would welcome parents’ and young people’s feedback on the studies. We would also like to discuss ideas for future research, to make sure that we are trying to answer the right questions and are generating information that is useful and important to families. We will use your feedback to shape current research and to help design future studies.
- Using the Rotterdam Transition Profile and other measures of transition Dr Catherine Tuffrey, Teaching Research Fellow, North Tyneside General Hospital
The Rotterdam Transition Profile is a recently published tool, developed in the Netherlands with young people with cerebral palsy. This workshop will provide some background to the tool and we will discuss how it might be used in practice. In addition, other measures will be discussed which may be helpful clinically in measuring outcomes and in guiding discussions with families and young people, about various aspects of transition.
