NEPHO continues to deliver a range of health intelligence outputs while discussions continue on the future configuration of Public Health Information and Intelligence. More information should become available by the end of the year when plans for Public Health England are published and indicative budgets of local authorities become available. We continue to welcome feedback on this newsletter and any of the work mentioned.
Life expectancy in the North East of England
Recent updates from the Office for National Statistics are now available through a NEPHO briefing on life expectancy Look out for further briefings from NEPHO, with the next one on dementia coming out before the end of the year.

National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS)
The North East NDTMS team has launched a Treatment Outcomes Profile e-learning tool which is now hosted on the NEPHO website.
There is also a report on NDTMS data for young people using the 2008/9 dataset which will be available on the NEPHO website soon.

Health inequalities gap measurement tool
The health inequalities gap tool, developed by the Department of Health South East, South East Public Health Observatory and London Health Observatory, has now been updated to include mortality data from 2001 to 2009. The tool can be accessed on the South East PHO website.
Excess Winter Deaths Atlas
An Excess Winter Deaths Atlas has been produced by the West Midlands Public Health Observatory to support those responsible for Cold Weather Planning. It is a web-based tool which includes a series of interactive maps and charts and contains data for each Local Authority.
Acute hospital catchment populations
Catchment populations for all acute trusts in England have been calculated by the Eastern Region Public Health Observatory. The estimates are based on hospital admissions between 2006/07 and 2008/09, and use 2009 mid-year population estimates for Lower Super Output Areas. Catchment populations based on all admissions, elective admissions and emergency admissions have been calculated.
Progress on revascularisations in the North East
NEPHO have recently published data on revascularisation operations in the North East which can be downloaded here The data show that there was a fall in premature deaths from circulatory disease in the North East by 46% from 1995/97 to 2007/09. This exceeds the national target of 40%. Look out for an occasional paper on this topic which will be published before Christmas.

NEPHO have recently completed a review of hospital admissions for neurological conditions in the North

SHAPE opens access to Local Authorities
Strategic Health Asset Planning and Evaluation application (SHAPE) is now freely available to Local Authorities to support them in delivering their wider role in the health of the public including (JSNA), and Health and Wellbeing Strategies, and health scrutiny.

Premature Mortality from Tobacco and Alcohol Abuse
NEPHO has recently published a review of premature mortality from smoking. We will shortly publish an occasional paper on premature mortality from alcohol abuse in the North East of England. This report will show that there are around 600 deaths per year due to alcohol in people aged 35-69 in the North East and that there are differences in rates between the local authorities.

New additions to the NEPHO Analytic Team website (Data):
The NEPHO Analytic Team website provides a repository for health data produced by NEPHO or others. In the last few months, the following new datasets have been added to the site:
- Analysis of multiple admissions to hospital
- Changes in hospital admission rates for revascularisations in the North East
Public Health Intelligence North East PHINE
PHINE will host the final network meeting of 2011 on 16th November at the Lindisfarne Centre, St Aidan's College, Durham University. Details of the event can be found here.
We have also launched a PHINE group on LinkedIn. The aim of this group is to maintain networks during the transition period and increase awareness of the PHINE network. The group will be run in conjunction with the existing website and can be found here.
Improving Health and Lives Website Relaunch
The Improving Health and Lives Learning Disability Observatory website has been redesigned to make it easier to find data and reports on learning disabilities in England. Recent features on the site include a database of reasonable adjustments made by NHS organisations, and a new annual report on Health Inequalities & People with Learning Disabilities in the UK.
Website Accessibility
New accessibility options have been added to all the websites hosted by NEPHO, including NEPHO, PHINE and Fuse. Clicking the 'accessibility' link in the website footer will let you change the font size on every site, and some websites offer alternative colour schemes and other options. We're committed to making our websites accessible to the widest possible range of people, and always appreciate feedback on how we can make our sites better.
